Tree Pose: find balance amidst the chaos

One of San Francisco’s premiere yoga instructors, Janet Stone, had words of wisdom that reminded me to balance & ground myself today.

“The energy we put out to nurture & hold it all together can be exhilarating, but also overwhelming and exhausting…intense demands often mean we place the needs of others before even our own most basic requirements — health, food, sleep, bathing (you know it’s been awhile) — to the point where we can lose connection to our own center. Receive the gift of this inhalation and exhalation, the simplicity of what is occurring right now. Root down through your feet, rise up through the crown of your head and allow your belly to softly, compassionately, draw in. Notice how much more energy and clarity you have when you come from steadiness.” -Janet Stone

I spent the day in good company & went on a hike at Temescal Canyon that overlooked both LA & the ocean. The combination of both of these sights inspired me to be balanced amongst the chaos, yet posses enough flexibility & grace to be fluid. We snapped some pictures to capture the beauty around us & I felt very grounded during Vrksasana (Tree Pose). If you’re finding it difficult to balance the demands of life, give Tree Pose a try for lessons in grounding, steadiness, & fluidity. Refine your balance & feel the freedom of Vrksasana with Rodney Yee’s 1:30 min instructional & informative video on Tree Pose!

glowing skin with an at home, cost-friendly facial that uses natural ingredients

By living in LA, were up against a lot of traffic & pollution. Both can lead to some gnarly stress, which can cause inflammation in the body. Some places where that inflammation is evident is on the face, in the form of acne/breakouts. One of my dear friends hollered at me today to come over & work some magic on her face. I’m no licensed esthetician (a person who is trained in the cosmetic treatment of the skin), but with a little research & a dash of intuition, I love creating beauty treatments for friends using natural ingredients, especially facials! Facials are amazing for both men & women because they cleanse off all the build up accumulating around your pores. As layers of dead cells are sloughed off, your skin is left feeling fresh & radiant. Were faced with two issues though…1) facials can be expensive, running you around $80 or more a pop 2) Some facials treatments use harsh chemicals which can lead to putting even more stress on the body.

If I were to get a really, really, bah.nans, out of this world all natural organic facial I’d say it’d cost me around $100 plus gratuity. Then I’m going to be told that I need to come back on a monthly basis. My wallet is getting thinner just thinking about it. I would never fight the fact that getting advice from a trained professional on what works best for your skin is a great idea, but it can be pretty costly to get facials on a regular basis. My solution? Take $100 or so & invest it into my little at home spa! Now I can splurge on professional facials from time to time throughout the year, but keep up monthly maintenance on my own without breaking the bank.

Steps to create a cost-friendly facial using natural ingredients!!

1. Face Map

The fist step is to take note of where blemishes, spots, &/or acne breakouts are concentrated & relate them to the facial chart on the left. In Chinese Medicine it is believed that different parts of the face correspond to different apects of the body. I’ve found that paying attention to this can be very telling. For example, if I go on a bender & know I’ve been consuming too many alcoholic beverages or have been eating poorly, my body tells me it needs to detox by breaking out around the chin area. The chin corresponds to the kidney & bladder, which are major detoxification centers in the body! Notice where you breakout and try to figure out if the facial map correlates to what’s going on in your life. Breakouts can be a result of both external & internal triggers. It’s important to note that acne is a process that starts on the inside, breaks the surface, and THEN is visible on the outside. You may benefit from taking the time to analyze what’s going on inside you before seeking expensive, chemical treatments that may be only masking your problem. Think, if you breakout around your nose, could you be holding unreleased emotions in your heart? If your jawline is the issue, could you be having digestive problems or maybe it could be related to the chakras located around the stomach area? Everyone will have different triggers- it may or may not work for you, but definitely worth a shot!

2. Prep

Fill a bowl with warm water & have plenty of towels on hand.

3. Start the steamer

This was one of my “larger” investments. It’s a Paragon table-top facial steamer. It cost me $60. It’s amazing! It really elevates the standards of at-home facials. You fill it with distilled water, flip the switch, let the water heat up to a boil, & steam is released through the rotating arm. It takes about 5-7 min for it to start steaming so it’s smart to get it going while you continue to prep other things.

This particular unit usually gives you about 15-20 min of quality steam time. My general sequence of events during a facial is: cleanse. exfoliate. steam. mask. moisturize, but when I use this unit I tend to have my client sit under the steam as I cleanse their face & it usually stops as they are about half way through the mask. If you don’t feel like spending the money on this unit you can induce a steam-like effect by placing a warm towel over you face to open up your pores.

4. Essential oil

The great thing about the table top steamer I purchased is that it also has an essential oil slot! You place a few drops of essential oil on a strip that gets inserted near the arm of the steamer. The aroma is then diffused through the steam. For my friend who needed to detoxify, I chose to use Aura Cacia’s tea tree essential oil. The aroma of the oil is warm, spicy, & medicinal. Aromatherapy benefits include being cleansing, purifying, & uplifting. 100% Organic Essential oils cost ~ $8.

5. Cleanse

Wash your hands & cleanse your face to remove dirt & residue. If you have a certain cleanser that works best for you, then use what’s familiar to your skin. When giving my friend a facial today I started out by using a cotton ball dabbed in witch hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) to remove dirt & oil from her face. Witch hazel is a natural product obtained from the leaves & bark of the witch hazel shrub. The tannins in witch hazel give it astringent properties. An astringent tones the face by minimizing the size of pores & can cleanse acne-prone skin. I like using Thayer’s original witch hazel with aloe vera astringent, which runs for ~ $10. If you tend to have dry skin you shouldn’t further dry it out by using astringent. Read more about the Benefits of Witch Hazel for Acne.

At this point, my friend is currently laying under the steamer which facilitates the opening of pores in order to release toxins. To further cleanse her skin I dipped a towel in a bowl of warm water & pressed it against her face to get it wet. Then, I lathered her up with Biore’s Steam Activated Cleanser (Cost ~$6). Although this is one of the less natural ingredients used, my friend gives it a thumbs up! Product Features Include:

  • Infused with Green Tea extract, known for its antioxidant and detoxifying properties.
  • Ultra mild: soap free, sulfate-free, vegetable based. Will not clog pores.
  • Uses the pore opening power of shower steam for a truly deep clean.
  • Cooling mint extract complex counteracts the warmth of the shower to invigorate & leave skin feeling fresh, clean, & vibrant.

6. Exfoliate

Exfoliating sloughs off layers of dead skin so that healthier, smoother skin can shine through. One of my favorite exfoliators of all time is COFFEE! You must, must, must! try it…life changing. I blend coffee grounds with a base of Aura Cacia’s Organic Sweet Almond Oil (~$6). Apply to face in circular motions & then wipe off with a wet towel. I use almond oil because it’s moisturizing & rich in Vitamin E. The almond oil isn’t absolutely necessary, but do make sure to buy ORGANIC COFFEE! Why? You don’t want to put any unnecessary chemicals on your face! Here’s a little lesson I learned from one of my fav restaruants- Urth Cafe

– Heavy Chemicals – Coffee is the heaviest chemically treated food commodity in the world. The most common chemical used in coffee production is synthetic petroleum based fertilizers which slowly destroy the soil’s fertility and seep into local water supplies.
-Deforestation – Coffee trees do not naturally grow in direct sunlight, but under the shade of dense rainforest. To increase productivity, the coffee industry has developed sun-resistant coffee tree hybrids that have come to comprise approximately 70% of the world’s coffee production. As a result rainforest is being cleared at alarming rates to make room for new, sun resistant coffee trees.

After the divine coffee exfoliator, I use Neutrogena’s Wave Power Cleanser (~$8). Don’t worry boys it also comes in blue & green ;) This little thing is ah.mazing. It vibrates to cleanse & exfoliate your skin & truly leaves your skin feeling soft after just 1 use. Pretty simple to use too..Apply a pad to the attachment head, run it under water to activate the foam, press the power button & gently massage over your face. For double the price ($16), there’s also a more evolved version of this product called the Wave Sonic. Same concept, but it has 2 speeds: one for gentle daily cleansing & another for deep cleansing.

7. Mask

Because my friend tends to have oilier skin, I applied a clay-based face mask. For dry skin, try using a hydrating gel or cream mask. Always read the directions on products for application times.

I enjoy making my own masks out of natural ingredients, but today I used, faceSPA’s purifying clay facial masque in clay & ginseng. My friend loved it. She felt that her skin was pulsating during & noted her face felt extremely fresh after. On Amazon it retails for about $25, but I picked mine up for probably no more than $10 at TJMaxx.

I use a foundation brush (~$7) to apply the mask to make it feel like a true SPA-like experience :) This specific mask called for a 15-20 min application time. After the time was up, I used a wet towel to remove the mask. Whala! Radiating skin revealed!!

8. Moisturize

Now in a re-freshed state, your skin is better able to absorb products. We smoothed on a mosturizer + sunscreen & eye moisturizer.

After her facial, my friend was left oozing with radiance. Her skin was smoother, dewey & fresh…she looked ah.mazing!! Hope you have similar results! To give you a quick cost comparison…The LA Skinny Black Book to Beauty listed Marc Edward Skincare as the winner of the “Best Facials in Los Angeles That Works” for 2010. An organic facial here cost $155! If you add up the price of all my equipment + products for the facial listed above it totals between $110-$125. The fact that these products & equipment keep on giving make this a beauty treat worth investing in!

Enjoy :)

Practice self-compassion & rock on with your brilliant self!

When going through yoga teacher training, in order to set yourself up for success, 2 important concepts were emphasized:

  1. “Let go of your expectations.” The mind will often resist being taught, & will resist change. Letting go of expectations doesn’t mean you don’t have any, it means you’re no attached to them, and you’re more open to receive what you’re given.
  2. “Practice Self-compassion.” Being compassionate with yourself allows you to acknowledge your struggles & provides the supportive emotional environment necessary for change.

I think that the latter is especially important at this time of year because, as I discussed in the previous post, it can be easy to engage in negative self talk when we realize it’s February & we haven’t been committed to any of our new year’s resolutions. It can be difficult to want to continue on a path of change when you’re being told, “YOU want to lose 10 lbs…pshhh, get real”, “you’ll never be able to change”, “you don’t have what it takes.” What’s even worse, is that most of the time the person making us believe these things is OURSELVES! We would never treat anybody else like this, yet when it comes to ourselves, we justify saying these self-destructive things. Self-destructive thoughts lead to self-destructive behavior…NO BUENO!!

I recently read an article in Yoga Journal called “Nuture the new you” by Kelly McGonial, PhD. Dr. McGonial is a health psychologist, professor, & yoga teacher (talk about a bosslady! own it!). It highlighted the importance of self compassion, here are some of my favorite quotes from it that inspire me to cultivate self-love! Hope that after reading them, you feel more moved and motivated to get back on track to keep on shining :)

  • Self-transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but you CAN overcome negative patterns one step at a time. If you are gentle with yourself & accept your setbacks with compassion, you can change your life for the better.
  • Be kind to yourself when you’re confronting personal weaknesses, challenges, & setbacks.
  • Self-Compassion goes beyond self-acceptance. It has an active component of caring, of wanting the best for yourself. It means saying to yourself, “I want to heal, to be happy, to be healthy,” and knowing that sometimes requires you to make a change. – Kristin Neff
  • Say to yourself, “I’M CHANGING THIS BEHAVIOR BECAUSE I DESERVE TO LIVE A HEALTHIER, HAPPIER LIFE.” -Maggie Juliano
  • Accepting yourself where you are- & forgiving yourself for setbacks-makes you more likely to succeed.
  • Self-compassion gives you the strength to take care of yourself, even when it’s tempting to succumb to an old habit.
  • We each possess an inner resource of wisdom, resilience, & strength, a place of deep peace & ease, and great joy & light. When we’re connected with that place, there isn’t self-doubt. We know from our core who we are what to do. Yoga will help you get there. And being kind to yourself will, too. -Kate Holcombe

Self-compassion is not about feeling bad about yourself, it’s about recognizing that we all have setbacks & realizing that that’s in fact part of the process of changing. Don’t you feel more motivated to rock on with your brilliant self?!

If you’re buzzing with enthusiasm, keep the momentum going & check out the self-compassion meditation!!!

Sending everyone love, hugs, kisses, good vibes, & sunny skies!

It’s february! Redirect the focus back to new year’s resolutions! Goal setting challenge PART II

So folks we’ve made it to February 2011! I constantly have to remind myself “don’t let those goals you set in January get placed on the back burner…it’s only February!” Let’s be real, I was saying this same exact line last month, except I replaced February with “it’s only the 2nd week in January!”Around the new year expectations & hopes are high. We are motivated to set goals, intentions, & resolutions. We are eager to replace old habits with new ones. We are determined that THIS. year. is. OUR. year…. Soooo how is it possible that within 31 days, that enthusiasm has worn off ? Welcome challenges of the real world. I find myself up against important deadlines & endless to-do lists. Suddenly, old and familiar patterns become more appealing….hitting the snooze button instead of waking up for yoga. Grabbing food on the go instead of taking the time to prepare it myself. Accumulating at least an hour on facebook throughout the day instead of spending that hour at the gym. So on & so forth.

Well…I welcome February with open arms because I consider it a fresh start and a good time to re-group & re-focus my intention. So here we go…time to dust the cobwebs off the old goal sheet….if you didn’t set goals for 2011, it’s not too late to start!! Download the template: aryoga135goalsettingsheet!

I invite you to take on PART II of the goal setting challenge (click here to review part I)….

Go through each goal that was set this year & do 2 things…

  • focus on the positive :)
  • brainstorm ways to change what’s not working

Embrace diversity. Educate your community. Empower each other. Love life.

Embrace who you are. Embrace the diversity around you. Educate your friends and family. Educate your peers at work and school. Educate the community you live in. Be empowered and empower others. Love life. -3Elove

I had the pleasure of meeting Stevie Hopkins when I was somewhat studying at the University of Illinois. Although, I do question his frozen yogurt concoctions (he once made me a mash up of peanut butter + peaches + sprinkles + cinnamon + popcorn? it’s cool, there was a cherry on top), I have never questioned his ambition to bring his company & social message to life.

3E Love is a disability awareness clothing line & marketing company founded in 2007 by siblings Annie & Stevie Hopkins & their family & friends. The mission of the company is simple; to create and market products and services that embrace living life no matter the obstacles, and by doing so, educate society and empower those with disabilities to love life.

Annie took the traditional symbol that represents “handicap” & “disability”, and placed a unique twist on it. She gave rise to the international symbol of acceptance. On January 20th, 2009 Annie was taken from this world. Since then Stevie has done remarkable things to honor his sister’s legacy, celebrate her, & keep her spirit alive. One of the many notable things he’s done is to push for January 20th to be acknowledged as the International day of Acceptance. This past week, January 20th, was an opportunity to encourage social acceptance of people with disabilities; a day to embrace, educate, & empower; and a day to honor the late Annie Hopkins, co-founder of 3elove.

How do I embrace, educate, & empower?

I love to challenge traditional rehab models & use yoga to help people reconnect with their bodies. I currently am a private yoga instructor who adapts & individualizes yoga for those who are paralyzed. The majority of my work has been with individuals with spinal cord injuries, but I’m always open to any opportunity which allows me to help people access their bodies in new ways. I wholeheartedly believe that “impossible” is a state of mind & I encourage people to reevaluate what they think limits them.

This mentality allows me to resonate with & support the mission of Life Rolls On. Life Rolls On is a subsidiary of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injury and utilizes action sports as a platform to inspire infinite possibilities despite paralysis. This past year I’ve volunteered at adaptive surfing events in San Diego & Manhattan Beach & adaptive skiing at Big Bear Mtn. I’ve crossed paths with amazing people & am grateful to each and every one of them for inspiring me in one way or another.

Volunteering & being an advocate for people with disABILITIES has truly changed my life. Connecting with people of all abilities on a regular basis allows me to spread 3e loves message: Embrace who you are. Embrace the diversity around you. Educate your friends and family. Educate your peers at work and school. Educate the community you live in. Be empowered and empower others. Love life.

I choose to rock 3elove & spread the brand because I love everything it stands for. I support a powerful social message & I support Stevie’s journey. A journey of healing, a journey of finding himself, & most significantly a journey of him connecting & uniting through everything that brings HIM joy :)

Jan. 20th may have come & gone, but it’s never too late to take action….how do YOU embrace, educate, & empower?

Check out the 3elove store to score some rad apparel of your own. My favorite is the American Apparel Love Zip up. Happy shopping.

As always, keep it real!

dank beats & dope rhymes

Whats better than the violin? Hip Hop on the violin. Paul Dateh kills it in this video. The fact that he starts out with Tribe melts my heart. Also check out my girl Miri Ben Ari. She’s bah.nans when it comes to hip hop on the violin.

The 2nd song he throws down is Jurassic 5′s Canto de Ossanha. I cannot tell you how many times my boys Kyle & Sanchez & I got down to this song in undergrad. Definitely on my list of all time favorites. Click on the link below to hear it out in its full glory…

Jurassic 5 Canto de Ossanha

Miri Ben Ari has worked with Kanye, John Legend, Twista, & done so many other dope collabs. Here’s one of my favorites….

Physical Therapy Service Trip to Mexico

Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.
-john wesley

In September of 1997, Hurricane Nora hit Northern Mexico destroying hundreds of homes. The following month Physical Therapists & volunteers from Tucson, AZ joined residents of Puerto Peñasco, Mexico to assist with relief & rebuilding efforts. From this joint effort came the idea of “Manos de Ayuda” (Helping Hands), a non-profit corporation that has both countries working together to provide much needed services, supplies & equipment for a variety of humanitarian programs. Today, Manos de Ayuda is a group of Physical Therapists, Health Care Professionals, & other compassionate volunteers, dedicated to providing humanitarian, medical, rehabilitation, & educational services to persons who are in need of assistance in Northern Sonora, Mexico.

In January of 2011, several of my classmates from the USC Doctor of Physical Therapy program & I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico to work alongside with Manos de Ayuda. This trip not only solidified my reasoning for becoming a Physical Therapist, but also made me realize that I want to continue to dedicate more time to international service trips!

We drove 10 hours down to Mexico & thats how the journey came to be. From my lens this is what I got to see…there was nothing more rewarding than to start the year by sharing my expertise with others while they simultaneously taught me. Theirin lies the beauty of this experience… it’s not only what I gave, but also what I got to receive. I gave my time & they gained from my knowledge, but there’s something bigger here to be acknowledged. I walked away exposed to things they don’t teach you in college.

While in a new environment, experiencing a different culture, there’s something to be said for making connections & creating relations. We had families lining up… generations upon generations. We created solutions, but mostly listened to them voice their frustrations about their current medical situations. Living on dirt floors & off a limited income, no electricity or running water, but they had hope they would soon save enough to afford a surgery for their 3 year old daughter. That puts into perspective the things I think in my life are a pain in the neck…hey yo, talk about a reality check. Definitely solidifies that the greatest gift is health & contentment is the greatest wealth. I know that pursuing a career in physical therapy is what makes me happy & I am grateful to be healthy enough to invest my time & skills somewhere where my presence is needed. Without a doubt, any expectations about what I would gain from the experience were far exceeded. I am so grateful for all the opportunities that I’m given, l appreciate all the help I receive, I am so thankful for all the people who take the time to care for me…It seems kinda whack that I wouldn’t take all that love & give on back.

goals & ambitions all up in my face

my wall of goals & ambitions

My goals are big, scary, exciting, & hairy! There’s nothing that keeps me more accountable to them than having them all up in my face on a daily basis. Hence why I dedicated some wall space to displaying what I would like to accomplish in this lifetime. This “wall of goals & ambitions” is one of the first things I look at in the AM & when I walk into the room. Every time it catches my eye, it brings my focus & dedication back to what truly matters to me. The plans for the rest of my life don’t deserve to be buried under a pile of papers on my desk! I encourage you to create some sort of sacred space that allows you to see your bucket list on a daily basis. Get creative & find a way to “keep in site” that you are the cause & creator of your destiny!

As always, keep it cool, funky, & fresh!

sassy nail polish reminders!

My friend Melissa, the raw food stylist, challenged me to think outside the box & try something new….Here’s her challenge…

“On your next manicure polish your 4th finger a different color as a reminder to learn something new about yourself and try new things! Whatever color you choose can serve a different purpose for you personally whether it be a RED as a reminder to show more love to people or one certain person. It can be GREEN to remember to recycle or eat greens everyday. It can be YELLOW to remember to give random acts of kindness to people around you. Maybe your ring finger reminder is meant to bring attention to a bad habit, a new personal goal, or just simply thinking more positive thoughts. Whatever it may be please join me in the fun challenge & post a pic on my wall or on your page showing your color and why!”
Here are my nails!

I chose purple because it’s my favorite color, so this attracts me to constantly look at my nails. When I look down, the contrasting purple on my ring finger serves as reminder to stay true to all the goals I set this year :)

Another thing I love to do on a regular basis is paint my toe nails fire engine red! It’s a reminder for me to stay grounded because the color red is associated with the 1st chakra- the chakra related to being grounded in the present moment.

vision boards

A vision board is a collection of words & images that describe your goals & intentions. It provides you with an excellent visual reminder of the dreams & desires you want to attract & manifest in your life!

Here’s what I did & I invite you to do the same!

  • called a tried & true friend & got her hyped up on the idea of creating vision boards
  • gathered old magazines & any glue, markers, scissors, glitter, & crayons i had laying around
  • took a trip to the craft store & scoured the clearance aisle. Scored us $10 frames & picked up some stickers & scrapbook paper.
  • We created a collage of all the words & images we collected. This allowed us to creatively express & envision the things we wanted to attract & manifest into our lives health-wise, career-wise, & on a personal level.
  • In the previous post I shared what my 1,3, & 5 year goals are. I tried to incorporate most of those onto my board.
  • Our final products will be proudly displayed somewhere we can see them & meditate upon them often!!

Here our are final products :)
